Designed by architect Francisco de Arruda, the structure was initially conceived as part of the defensive system of the Tagus estuary. Set on a rocky outcrop originally surrounded by waters, the tower presents two main elements: a keep in the medieval tradition and a modern bastion prepared for artillery.

The exterior decoration reveals fascinating details: cordage sculpted in stone, cylindrical watchtowers with decorated domes, and naturalistic motifs such as a sculpted rhinoceros, recalling the voyages of discovery. Its 16 gun ports allowed strategic defense of the entrance to Lisbon's harbor.

Throughout the centuries, the tower served various purposes: customs post, political prison and lighthouse. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and elected one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal in 2007, the Belém Tower continues to fascinate visitors with its history and architectural beauty.
